Social Media/Social Awareness

One of the best things of the modern age is that people are more aware about social justice. Make no mistake, humans as a species still have a lot of societal problems to resolve, as evidenced by the racial-inspired killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in the USA, the Chinese treatment of Uyghurs, among others. But there are numerous improvements in our general worldview compared to that of the world in as recent as 30 years ago.

“Wokeness” is the term used to describe this newfound awareness in people, although half of the time it is used as a pejorative. Regardless, being the appropriate amount of woke is generally welcome, something I’d take 11 times out of 10 over outdated beliefs and mindsets. I said “appropriate amount” because, like with everything else, a little too much becomes toxic.

Anyway, that’s not the point I want to talk about. I don’t want to say something preachy or whatever. I just wanted a serious sounding introduction. This is just a random thought I had recently. So here it goes.

I appreciate the empathy and general awareness shown by the more affluent members of our society to the Average Joe like you and I. I do, I really do. However, I just find this image in my head quite… amusing. What image you say?

I personally know people who are in that upper middle-class/rich tier of society. Sometimes I see their tweets/posts denouncing the injustices done upon the working class, how the (other) rich elite tend to discriminate the poor. And I laud and agree with their point 90% of the time. I just find it amusing that they say this chilling in some fancy cafe eating expensive food, drinking pretentious coffee, sending out their thoughts to the internet via their expensive Mac Book or iPhone.

This is not an indictment of anything. I’m not here to discuss the ethics of having a ton of money whilst others have none. That’s a debate for another time. And again, I’m not degrading people who are like this (at least not with this post). I just find it amusing. Really. There’s something deliciously ironic with it.

Anyway, I just hope these people don’t pat themselves on the back for doing this, LOL. I mean, expressing opinion on societal injustices is definitely welcome in a democracy, but it’s hardly an achievement for anyone. Hopefully they back those concerns/thoughts/opinions with action that helps in the plight of the common man. Otherwise it’s just another case of joining a trendy bandwagon.
