Kainan With Kinan: I Sold Out and Made Dalgona Coffee

If you’ve been on social media these past few weeks of Coronapocalypse-induced social quarantine, you’d know that a coffee-based drink called dalgona coffee is popular amongst kids.

Dalgona coffee is a drink (that originated in Pakistan, India, and Macau) made of instant coffee powder, sugar, and water that’s whipped (whisked? beaten?) together to form a thick froth that’s put on top of milk in a glass. It became popular after a Korean TV show called Pyunstorang featured it on one of its episode. The drink was then christened  dalgona because it resembles the traditional Korean candy of the same name.

It is trendy and hip to make your own  dalgona coffee and post in on your Instagram like all the cool kids do. So of course my pretentious self did it as well. There are plenty of  dalgona coffee tutorials on YouTube, so just go search on there if you want to try and make a glass yourself.

This is my aesthetically-pleasing version of dalgona coffee. I am so in.

Here is how I did it:

  1. Put 2 tablespoons each of instant coffee powder, sugar, and water on to a bowl.
  2. Whisk it real good. You can use a fork or a baking whisker. Do this until the liquid becomes thick and frothy. This could take a substantial amount of time (ranging from 10-20 minutes), so think of it as exercise for your arms if you aren’t getting any *immature chuckles*. You can also use an electric whisker (if you are privileged enough to own one) to save time.
  3. Pour milk (preferably fresh, but powdered milk is fine, too, as long as you don’t forget to mix it in water).
  4. Artistically place the coffee froth on top of the milk. Make it look as aesthetically-pleasing as possible, or else your effort will all be in vain as it won’t look good on Instagram. Remember, if it doesn’t look good enough for Instagram, then it’s just a waste of time.
  5. Get phone/camera. Take artistic photos of your drink.
  6. Fire up Lightroom and edit to your pretentious heart’s content.
  7. Save edits, upload photo to Instagram, write equally pretentious caption.
  8. Wait for compliments from followers.
  9. Discard drink because it’s too sweet for you (but it’s ok, you impressed people with your photo anyway, and that’s all that matters).
  10. Sleep well knowing you are so in.
