It’s literally just the third day of the new year, and tension over global politics is already boiling. Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military officer, was killed today in an drone strike at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq. News broke out that U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the assassination.
Iran and the United States already have a shaky relationship at best, and this incident isn’t helping ease the friction between the two countries that, incidentally, own an arsenal of nuclear weapons at their beck and call.
People feared that war will break out between the two states, with many (probably an overreaction) expressing that it could lead to World War 3. That particular phrase even trended on social media sites.

On one hand, it’s hilarious to see that not even the threat of another global war could stop memers (like myself) from making fun of a situation. However, wars are no funny matter as millions could be dead should Iran and the US decide to unleash their superweapons (unlikely but still possible).
This is not an ideal way to start the year. Nobody wants to start anything on a bad note. Hopefully tensions get diffused so we could just meme light-hearted things in the succeeding weeks instead of an incident where peace hangs precariously on the balance.
