Today is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate all the incredible women of the world. For much of history, women have been treated as mere properties of men who have no true purpose but to satisfy the whims of their supposed masters. This couldn’t be any further from the truth.
Time and time again, women have proven to be equals of men, succeeding in things long thought to be impossible for the feminine gender. History is filled with heroic women who proved they can stand toe to toe with men in various fields — Joan of Arc, Mother Teresa, Gregoria de Jesus, as well as all the modern women — athletes, celebrities, politicians, teachers, activists, doctors, nurses and many more who are fighting for justice and equality.
Personally, some of my emo and pop punk heroes are empowered women — Jenna McDougall of Tonight Alive, Hayley Williams of Paramore, and Taylor Swift to name a few — who use their platform to influence change and I love them for that.
Also your mom and sisters are women too that should be celebrated as well.
